"What Does It Give? The Benefit of the Sacrament of the Altar" (Midweek Lenten Sermon Series)

“What Does It Give? The Benefit of the Sacrament of the Altar”In this midweek Lenten series, we’re looking at the Sacrament of the Altar--Holy Communion, the Lord’s Supper, are other names by which we know this sacrament instituted by Christ. Last week we began by focusing on “The Nature of the Sacrament.” We asked the foundational question, “What Is It?” And the answer came, “It is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ himself for us Christians to eat and to drink.” Our answer was based on what Jesus...

Whose Death Matters More?

I think the first time I grappled with this question was in an undergraduate philosophy course. The professor was a Yaley, very very smart, and loved to provoke us. His job, after all. So one day, when a famous person had died, he said in his flippant way, “obviously this man was much more important than Joe Schmoe down the block, and the society should value him more, and try harder to protect him and tend to him if he’s sick, etc etc.” And so we debated, in the way of young students. Who is to say that one man’s...

Obama says, “No federal abortion funding in new healthcare bill” but…

Regardless of anything Barack Obama has said there will be federal funding for abortions in his new healthcare scheme and this is one of the major problems Americans have with it. An analysis of the new healthcare bill, posted by the White House, indicates Obama has no intension of cutting federal funding for abortions in this latest “new” version of healthcare. The new plan will provide $11 billion to expand Community Health Centers that will certainly do abortions. Apparently Obama and his Party believe Americans especially Pro Lifers are fools. The projected price tag for aborting millions of American babies...

Laura Chinchilla: Pro-Life Catholic Woman Elected President of Costa Rica

I write as a U.S. Citizen who loves my country and is deeply concerned over its loss of a moral compass. This is most obvious when we consider the acceptance of the term “abortion right” in the media. Abortions do not have rights, people do, no-one has a right to take innocent human life, period. The notion that freedom of choice includes a “right” to reach into a womb and kill our youngest neighbor at any time and for any reason with surgical strikes or chemical weapons is simply evil. Legal abortion amounts to a commodification of human persons. They...
